Soft Tissues of the Body – Ultrasound Scan (with possible tissue sample)

During the examination, we scan, among other things, muscles, tendons, and fatty tissue.

Briefly about the examination

You will have an ultrasound scan of the soft tissues in the body, such as muscles, tendons, or fatty tissue. During an ultrasound scan, we use sound waves to create images of the inside of the body. The sound waves are emitted and received via an ultrasound probe, which is moved over the skin.
The examination takes up to 30 minutes, but it is recommended to plan for up to 1 hour, as delays may occur.

The examination

You will lie down while we scan you. We apply gel to the skin and move the ultrasound probe over the skin with light pressure. The probe creates images on a screen. If there are irregularities under the skin that need further examination, you will be offered a tissue sample (biopsy), which is taken with a very thin needle. It may be necessary to insert the needle more than once, and you may experience brief pain when the tissue sample is taken. We send the tissue sample for analysis.

After the examination

Watch the wound if you have had a tissue sample taken
An infection can develop in a wound, even if only a small opening has been made in the skin. Contact your GP or the Acute Medical Helpline (1813) outside your GP’s opening hours if the wound becomes red, swollen, or oozes, or if you
suddenly develop a high fever.

You may get a bruise

You may develop a bruise and some swelling where the tissue sample was taken. This is normal and will go away on its own.

Results of the examination

You will receive a preliminary result during the scan. The more detailed result will be provided by the doctor or department that referred you for the examination. You can also view the result either at www.sundhed.dk or at www.minsundhedsplatform.dk.
