About nitrous oxide
We have good experience using nitrous oxide to sedate children during surgery, treatment or examination. Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas because it often makes children feel like laughing. It works quickly and leaves the body quickly. Nitrous oxide reduces anxiety, makes your child drowsy and provides mild pain relief. It can therefore be used for minor procedures in the emergency ward.
Nitrous oxide may be combined with another local anaesthetic if needed. Children can be given nitrous oxide if they:
- are over four years old
- can breathe through a tight-fitting mask
- are able to cooperate during the sedation.

How we give your child nitrous oxide
When your child is given nitrous oxide, we place a mask over your child’s nose and mouth. If your child prefers, we can add a scent to the mask, such as cola or strawberry.
The nitrous oxide starts working after about 3 minutes.
We help create a calm and reassuring atmosphere by talking to your child about things that are fun or comforting. You will be present during the entire sedation and can help support a good atmosphere.
If your child needs an injection, we use a local anaesthetic cream on the skin.
Your child’s senses are heightened by nitrous oxide
All sounds and visual impressions are heightened by nitrous oxide. We therefore recommend that you speak quietly in the room. Talk about something you know your child finds pleasant or comforting.
Nitrous oxide can cause warmth and tingling in the body
Some children feel tingling or pins and needles in their fingers, toes and feet. Some children feel warm, and in some cases, their voice becomes deeper.
Nitrous oxide can cause nausea and dizziness
Some children feel nauseous from nitrous oxide. In some cases, your child may also feel dizzy. These side effects are short-lived and disappear a few minutes after we stop giving the nitrous oxide.
Your child will be given pain relief
We aim to prevent pain by giving your child pain-relieving medicine. If your child still feels pain or discomfort after the operation or examination, we will give more pain relief immediately.
