About the examination

You will have an MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) of your scaphoid bone (a small bone in your wrist) to rule out a fracture. An MRI scan generates detailed images of your hand using radio waves and a powerful magnetic field.

Please come to Akutmodtagelsen (Emergency Ward) at Nordsjællands Hospital - Hillerød, Indgang 04 on __/__ - ______ at 11.15 to register.

After you have been registered, you will be directed to Billeddiagnostisk Afdeling, Radiologisk Afsnit (Diagnostic Imaging Department, Radiology Unit). Please report your arrival at the reception at Indgang 03C. Then take a seat in waiting area M.

We have made an appointment for you on __/__ - ______ at 11.45.

The examination takes about 15 minutes, but please allow one hour as there may be waiting time.

Important preparation

Let us know if you have any metal in your body

Metal objects must not enter an MRI scanner due to its strong magnetic field. You must therefore be aware if, for example, you have:

• metal clips in the brain
• a pacemaker (note that metal may remain even if your pacemaker has been removed)
• a stent
• any implanted devices such as an ear implant or an insulin pump
• an artificial sphincter
• metal splinters in your eyes/body
• electronic stimulators
• dentures with magnetic locks.

Please contact the doctor or department that referred you if any of this is relevant to you and you have not already discussed it. If you are unsure whether you have any metal in your body that affects the scan, please also let us know at the examination.

Do not wear loose metal objects during the MRI scan

Do not wear make-up, clothing or other items that contain metal. Examples include:

• jewellery, watches, hair ornaments, piercings or similar items
• clothing with metal, such as zips and buttons
• nicotine patches or medicine patches
• a blood glucose meter
• metal bandage
• eye shadow
• a mobile phone.

If in doubt, ask us. We recommend that you leave jewellery and other valuables at home and that you remove any piercings at home. As a general rule, the hospital does not replace lost or stolen items.

Contact us if you are pregnant or have recently had surgery

If you are or may be pregnant or if you have had surgery within the last six weeks, we need to take special precautions. You should therefore contact us before the examination.

Please prepare yourself if you have claustrophobia

If you have claustrophobia, please contact the doctor or department that referred you. They can give you medicine to help you relax before the examination.

The examination

We will go through a checklist together

Before the examination, we will go through a checklist with you and ask you a series of questions. Some of the questions may already have been asked by the doctor or department that referred you, but we ask them again for your safety. We will also explain the examination before we begin.

The examination

We will give you earplugs or earmuffs, as the scanner makes a lot of noise when we take the images. We will help you get comfortable on the table, which moves you into the MRI scanner.

You must lie completely still during the scan so that the images are clear. You will be alone in the room while you are being scanned, but we can see and talk to you the whole time.

Results of the examination

You will get the result of the examination at Akutmodtagelsen (the Emergency Ward). When the scan is finished, please go to Akutmodtagelsen (the Emergency Ward) and speak to the receptionist.
