Choosing where to give birth

You have the right to choose which public hospital you give birth at if there is capacity at the hospital, and if there are no special circumstances in connection with your pregnancy that speak against selecting a different hospital.

Free choice of hospital

In principle, you have the right to choose which public hospital you give birth at. However, this requires that there is capacity at the hospital in question, and that there are no special circumstances in connection with your pregnancy that speak against selecting a different hospital.

The central referrals office for births (Centrale Visitation for fødsler, CVF) decides where you will give birth based on your pregnancy journal supplied by your GP. The CVF ensures an optimal distribution of pregnant women across maternity wards based on medical criteria, the home address of the pregnant woman, capacity and the option of free choice of hospital.

If you want to change to another hospital, we can try to help you with this after your second trimester scan (congenital anomalies scan), approx. 20 weeks into your pregnancy. Contact us by phone number: +45 48 29 48 84. Monday to Friday between 08.00 a.m. – 03.00 p.m. With help from the CVF, we will check whether it is possible to change hospital and we will send you the answer via digital mail.

If you have any further questions about referrals or choosing a hospital, you are welcome to contact the CVF by phone number: +45 38 67 40 85 or phone number: +45 38 67 40 84, Monday to Thursday 08.00 a.m. – 03.00 p.m., Friday 08.00 a.m. – 12.00 p.m.
