Abdominal Ultrasound Scan with Full Bladder (Children 3–11 Years)

During this examination, we scan your child’s abdomen using sound waves. Please ensure that you follow all preparation instructions before the appointment.

Your child has been scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound scan. It is important that you read this entire guide before attending the appointment. The information includes preparation, the examination itself, and the results.

Purpose of the Examination

The purpose of the examination is to assess various organs using sound waves.

What Is an Ultrasound Scan?

An ultrasound scan involves sending sound waves (ultrasound) into the area being examined. These sound waves create echoes, which we can interpret as images on a screen. These images allow us to see whether there are any irregularities in the examined area.

Where does the Examination Takes Place?

The examination is performed at Nordsjællands Hospital – Hillerød.

Preparation for the Examination

To ensure a high-quality examination and clear visualization of the organs, your child must have a full bladder. Therefore, your child must drink some liquids 1 hour before the appointment. This may include water, tea, soda, or juice.
•    Children aged 3–5 years must drink ¼ liter of fluid.
•    Children aged 6–11 years must drink ½ liter of fluid.
It is important that your child does not urinate before the examination has been completed.

How the Examination Is Performed

Your child will lie on an examination table during the scan. The scan is performed by moving an ultrasound probe across the skin. To ensure good contact between the skin and the probe, we apply ultrasound gel to the area being examined.

Duration of the Examination

The ultrasound scan takes approximately 20 minutes.

Discomfort and Side Effects

The examination is generally painless. Ultrasound is a safe procedure with no known risks.

Results

We will send the results of the examination to the physician or department that referred your child.
